Response of the isolated seminal vesicle to the hypogastric nerve stimulation in the rabbit.

Abstract
It has been reported that the seminal vesicle is innervated by the sympathetic fibers from the hypogastric nerve and a marked contraction is produced by stimulation of this nerve in situ, however, such study on the effects of stimulation of the hypogastric nerve in the isolated seminal vesicle is not reported.
In this work, the isolated hypogastric nerve-seminal vesicle preparations were employed, and responses of the seminal vesicles to the hypogastric stimulation and effects of the various autonomic agents on th responses to the hypogastric stimulation were observed. The results obtained are as follows;
1. Stimulation of the hypogastric nerve elicited a marked contraction of the isolated seminal vesicle, and the most prominent effect was obtained by the stimulation with frequency ranged from 50 to 60 cps, The effect of the hypogastric stimulation was depressed by phenoxybenzamine, an adrenergic blocking agent.
2. The response of the isolated seminal vesicle to the hypogastric stimulation was not affected by either atropine or scopolamine, cholir ergic block ing agents.
3. Acetyicholine had no effect on the isolated preparation per se as well as on the responses of the preparation to the hypogastric stimulation.
4. Physostigmine evoked marked automatic movements of the isolated seminal vesicle and potentiated the responses of the preparation to the hypogastric stimulation.
5. Atropine, a cholinergic blocking agent, blocked the augmented automatic movements of the isolated seminal vesicle evoked by physostigmine.
6. The experimental results indicate the hypogastric innervation to the seminal vesicle is adrenergic in nature. In addition, effect of ghysostigmine on the isolated hypogastric nerve-seminal vesicle preparation is described.
